In addition, bullfrogs are nearly twice as big as grass frogs, so students receive a significantly better experience. Bullfrogs are highly recommended over grass frogs, since bullfrogs are an invasive species in much of the United States. For teaching suggestions, please see the teachers' guide (available free, but listed as a separate item on my list of products).Īlthough I used the guide with 7th graders, it would serve well as an introductory frog dissection guide for high school students. Of course, I ask that teachers limit copying to their own students. I anticipate that teachers will use their download of this guide in order to produce copies for their students. The 'no human' version is 11 pages shorter. However, it occurred to me that some teachers might want a self-paced guide that focuses entirely on the frog. The primary guide is further described below. Each year, the unit was more fun to teach! It became such a joy to support students as they taught most of the unit to themselves! In May, 2020 I reluctantly retired, and I revised the guide once again in December. These notes then guided my next revision. Sometimes, I noticed a student who had discovered a better method to complete a specific action (such as skinning the frog's chin). Annually, as I taught the unit, I made notes of steps that students found challenging, and I frequently probed students for their feedback. With significant help from a more computer savvy friend, I produced large, clear illustrations and began writing my own steps. The key, it seemed to me, was to produce a guide so detailed that students could teach themselves - at their own pace. While the students still enjoyed the unit, I must admit that this approach was exhausting!įinally, about 20 years ago I decided to produce my own guide. For several years I had all students complete one step at a time, and I provided students with a compilation of various illustrations. The descriptions were often confusing and the illustrations were much too small. Why this manual was created: When I began teaching in the late '70s, I was frustrated with the guides available to teachers. The fourteen large illustrations include clearly labeled structures. Throughout the guide, when information is provided about the human body, it is written in a different font and in italics. The 47 pages of instructions are written in short paragraphs, with a blank line between each paragraph. With this thorough, detailed self-paced guide, your entire human body unit is enhanced! For these 5-7 lab periods, your students' enthusiasm will be super-charged! The guide is the result of over 20 years of observing students in action.
